$1 Million Raised for Innovative Research
NEWPORT BEACH, CA, October 2011 – When diagnosed with kidney
cancer 12 years ago, Barry Hoeven recognized early on that there was a
disconnect between the number of people afflicted with kidney cancer and the
amount of funding and research being conducted to find a cure. It became clear to him that more research
needed to be done.
In April of 2007, Barry began raising funds for the City of
Hope’s kidney cancer research program, eventually establishing Kure It, Inc. as
an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2010. During this time, Hoeven had his
sights set on the goal of raising $1,000,000 for research into underfunded
cancers.
With the receipt of a large donation this week, Kure It has
reached that goal, having raised just over $1,000,000 since early 2007.
Newport Beach resident Hoeven stated, "We are excited to see
the new treatments these funds will bring about. Kure It’s success is a direct
credit to all of our supporters.”
Those who have banded together in the fight to fund groundbreaking
cancer research include multiple organizations, colleagues, friends, and
family. Early on, the self-storage industry became the leading contributor of
funds to Kure It. Hoeven’s company, US Storage Centers, has led the charge,
with many other operators and vendors following suit. To date, the industry has
contributed over $200,000, raised through company donations and tenant
contributions.
Kure It Director Karen Jones expressed her thanks to all
those who’ve responded to the need for research into rare and underfunded
cancers. "Now we can get to work on reaching Barry’s next goal, which is to
raise $1,000,000 each year for research. I feel confident that Barry’s
determination and commitment will see this goal met, as well. Kure It is on its
way to becoming a leader in funding innovative research into treatments for underfunded
cancers.”
About Kure It
Kure It is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise money for research specialists conducting innovative
projects to better treat and ultimately cure kidney and other orphan cancers. Founded by Barry Hoeven after his diagnosis
with kidney cancer, Kure It currently supports research being done at
Cedars-Sinai and City of Hope.
