CSSA Advocacy in Action: A Strong Q3 in Sacramento
CSSA Advocacy in Action: A Strong Q3 in Sacramento
CSSA’s advocacy efforts continued to gain momentum in Q3, with important legislative developments, increased engagement at the Capitol, and the launch of the association’s first Political Action Committee.
One significant victory was the defeat of AB 1777 (Garcia), which CSSA opposed due to concerns about expanding regulatory authority over indirect sources of emissions and the potential impacts on commercial properties and businesses.
Other results were mixed. AB 1710 (Carrillo), supported by CSSA, was held on the Senate Appropriations Suspense File. However, AB 1621 (Wilson), another CSSA-supported measure aimed at improving the post-entitlement permitting process, successfully advanced out of Senate Appropriations.
CSSA also took an Oppose Unless Amended position on SB 493 (Becker). The bill advanced from Assembly Appropriations with amendments; however, CSSA remains concerned that the changes may not adequately address the self storage industry’s concerns. Meanwhile, CSSA-supported SB 690 (Caballero) continues to move through the legislative process.
Beyond individual bills, CSSA members took our advocacy directly to policymakers during the 2026 California Commercial Real Estate Summit (CCRES) in Sacramento August 11–12. CSSA representatives met with legislators and Capitol staff to educate them about the important role self storage plays for California consumers and businesses, while highlighting the industry’s unique operational and regulatory challenges. These conversations help build relationships that extend well beyond any single piece of legislation.
CSSA also launched its first Political Action Committee and established a PAC Board, creating another important tool to strengthen the industry’s political engagement and voice in Sacramento.
Together, these efforts reflect CSSA’s growing advocacy program: monitoring legislation, acting when members’ interests are at stake, educating policymakers about our unique industry, and building the relationships and infrastructure needed to represent self storage effectively for the long term.
