Chairman Update for CSSA Insight Newsletter Q2

CSSA Newsletter,

It was an especially eventful Q2 for the CSSA.  Needless to say, we were not expecting to have to launch into a comprehensive defense strategy against an existential threat to our industry in the form of a proposed price control bill by the California legislature.  As we close our Q2, most California operators are now all too familiar with SB709.

Thankfully, we were able to build a powerful coalition among the SSA, CA Business Roundtable, CA Business Properties Association and several powerful Sacramento lobbying and consulting firms to advocate for our interests and negotiate a favorable outcome for our business.  But while we effectively transformed a threatening price control bill into much more reasonable disclosure requirements, our work is not done – to be sure.

Self storage is now on the radar, and requires an ongoing and vigilant effort by the CSSA to protect our industry from harmful and inappropriate legislative activity.  Our efforts to band together and advance a unified defense, while successful, were really just the beginning of this new reality for us.

As we discussed at our fantastic Napa event, many of you generously funded our defense of SB709.  But this too was just the beginning.  You’ll be hearing further from us, as we reach out for support to build a stronger presence in Sacramento to ensure that self storage is properly understood and effectively represented.

While we can be proud of the SB709 result, it’s critical that we’re ready to navigate the legislative challenges that most certainly lie ahead.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Newport Summit!
